Step into the Chinese Garden and you might just imagine you’re in ancient China! Built in 1975 and designed by Prof Yuen-chen Yu, a well-known architect from Taiwan, the Chinese Garden is modeled along the northern Chinese imperial style of architecture and landscaping.
You will first be greeted by the “Pai Hung Ch'iao” (meaning “white rainbow bridge”) which follows the style of the 17-Arch Bridge at the Summer Palace in Beijing.
Upon crossing the bridge, you will see a typical Chinese arch building which contains two courtyards and a fishpond.
Apart from buildings, gardens too are a constant motif in the Chinese Garden. Around the Chinese pavilion, plateau and tower are woven plants, rocks, a winding stream and footpaths, to create a harmonious scene.
A Suzhou-style Bonsai Garden, built at a cost of SGD 3.8 million, houses some 1,000 bansais imported mostly from China. A Bonsai Training Centre will be launched with resident experts from Shanghai and Suzhou to teach visitors the delicate art of caring for bonsai.

Where to shop: Sim Lim Square
You may be an eager techie an ordinary bargain hunter or a professional, but if its an IT gadget or electronic item you are looking for, chances are, you will find it a short walk from Little India or Bugis at Sim Lim Square. Very much an ELECTRONIC and IT HUB, this complex is busy, bustling loud and colourful. But more importantly, prices of its products are highly competitive.
The six-storey electronics plaza dazzles with rows and rows of gadgets, Stroll along the first two levels for consumer electronics like digital still cameras, digital camcorders, MD players, the newest plasma or LCD television screen, high-end sound systems and office equipment like fax machines. Professional needs are served here with very sophisticated cameras and recording equipment readily available.
The third to sixth levels are given to all-things IT. Tech-savvy locals throng the long corridors of computer shops with bargain-hunting tourists, searching for components, gadgetry games, repairs and software updates.
Laptops, palmtops, PDAs, webcams and other handy IT gadgets are immensely popular too, especially when these items hit our shores really fast. You can also have a computer assembled from scratch. Or you may be looking for storage solutions – zip drives, re-writeable CDs, diskettes, thumb drives, or even peripherals as mundane as cables!
Very often, visitors have realized that besides a better variety of products, the prices of gadgets here are lower than those back in their home countries. It is a good practice, wherever you may be making your purchase, to check that the item can be used back home – if the voltage requirements differ, and then you may have to get an adaptor.
And when browsing, you may want to keep a lookout for shops that are authorized dealers for certain brands too. These shops would have direct contact with dealers of major brands like Sony, Canon, JVC, and are often able to provide accurate product information.
As such, you may have to spend some time here to browse through Sim Lim Square’s shops. Get the most out of shopping at Sim Lim Square by shopping smart! Don’t hesitate to ask for information, grab brochure and compare prices, look out for shops participating in the STARetailer Programme which is administered by Sim Lim Square Traders’ Association. With all the options available here, it does pay to enquire – you can have fun searching (and bargaining) for the best prices too!
Location: 1 Rochor Canal Road. Open daily: 10.30am to 9.pm
Walking distance from Bugis MRT and Little India MRT Station
Free Shuttle Bus Service from Dhoby Ghaut MRT Station (by SMRT)
The STARetailer Pledge is:
* Not to sell products above RRP
* To be honest
* To issue official clear and concise receipts
* To refrain from abusive language or conduct
* To remain courteous and polite at all times
* To provide good after sales service
* To train and employ well trained or knowledgeable staff

If there is one word that best captures Singapore, it is “unique”. A dynamic city rich in contrast and colour, you'll find a harmonious blend of culture, cuisine, arts and architecture here. Brimming with unbridled energy, this little dynamo in Southeast Asia embodies the finest of both East and West.
A single day's trail will take you from the past to the future, from exotic ethnic enclave to efficient business centre, from serene gardens to sleek skyscrapers.
Start your day with a hearty breakfast amidst lush vegetation with Singapore's very own orang utans. Then take a step back in time as you enter a traditional Chinese temple, Muslim mosque, Hindu temple and Christian church - all in the same neighbourhood.
Return to the present by strolling down Orchard Road, picking up the latest fashion trends and entertaining local catch phrases along the way.
A simple meal is made memorable when drifting along the Singapore River on a traditional bumboat. Step off the boat and get catapulted 60 metres into the air on a reverse bungy ride! More laughter and fun is in store if you board an amphibious "duck" to explore the city, in the company of its wacky guides.
After a day of excitement, retreat into the peaceful sanctuary of our acclaimed spa, just a stone's throw away from the best business facilities in the world.
